Children, Caregivers, and Co-regulation: A Practical Lens for Observation and Insight
This session offers a practical overview of self-regulation, co-regulation, and parenting interaction patterns, with a focus on what these processes look like in real-world caregiver-child relationships.
Participants will consider how caregiver structure, responsiveness, and support shape children’s self-regulation, while also examining the relevance of stress, adversity, and environmental demands.
The session emphasizes a key practice message: supporting children well requires systemic support of caregivers. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
Wendy M. Morgan, Ph.D. is a senior learning and instructional design leader, researcher, and consultant whose work sits at the intersection of developmental science, professional learning, and practice improvement. She holds a PhD in interpersonal/family communication and developmental psychology, with academic and research training focused on parent-child interaction. Across her career, she has specialized in translating complex research into clear, usable learning experiences for practitioners.
In addition to her work in learning strategy and design, Dr. Morgan has extensive exposure to co-regulation research and technical assistance practice through applied professional learning initiatives. She is especially interested in how caregiver-child interaction patterns, contingent responding, and relationship-based supports can be understood and used in real-world settings that serve children and families.
